UPDATED: Alcatel-Lucent Tops the Rankings for VDSL2 Vectoring

Broadbandtrends recently released its vendor scorecard report for VDSL2 Vectoring.

Broadbandtrends interviewed and surveyed a number of DSLAM vendors regarding their capabilities to support and provide VDSL2 Vectoring solutions during April & May 2012.

The goal of this survey was to gain a better understanding of the features supported and experience related to VDSL2 vectoring deployments to determine which vendors were well positioned to leverage this opportunity.

Broadbandtrends submitted surveys to 13 DSLAM vendors.   Of these, seven vendors participated, four vendors declined to participate and the others simply did not respond to the request.  ADTRAN acquired Nokia Siemens Networks Broadband Access business unit in May 2012 and its products are included within ADTRAN’s results.

Vendors were evaluated across a number of categories including availability of product, line sizes supported, system features, ability to support multiple vectoring applications (line card, system and node), upgrade versus new system, field trial and actual deployment experience.

A total of 22 points were available, plus additional points for commercial deployments (one point per deployment):

  • Availability of Product:  2 Points
  • Line Sizes Supported:  5 Points
  • VDSL2 Vectoring Configurations Supported:  3 Points
  • Co-Existence Options Supported:  3 Points
  • VDSL2 Vectoring Platform Upgrade/Migration Requirements: 4 Points
  • System Support Features: 3 Points
  •  VDSL2 Vectoring Field Experience:  2 Points + 1 Point for Each Live Deployment

Alcatel-Lucent has the overall highest score for its VDSL2 vectoring solution, scoring high in general features, but separating itself from the rest of the group in sheer experience with actual deployments.  To date, Alcatel-Lucent is active in 18 Field Trials – with activity in all regions – but is also live at three customers (Belgacom, Telekom Austria, and an undisclosed Tier 1 in Europe) – the only vendor at this time that can lay claim to live deployments.  In addition, Alcatel-Lucent has been in trials longer than any other vendor, with solutions available since 2H10.

Of the seven participating vendors – five are currently active in VDSL2 Vectoring field trials.
